Economic and Strategic Importance

Economic Importance

Economic Importance to the City

By: Ashley Dorethy

The first major economic importance that comes to mind would be the Louisiana Purchase. Without this purchase, the city would have never formed. After the purchase was made, the United States gained 828,000,000 square miles of territory. This stretched from the Mississippi River in the east to the Rocky Mountains, into the west and from the Gulf of Mexico in the south to the Canadian Border in the north. As this allowed for this great city to form, it also expanded our country and our country as we know it today would not be the same without this purchase.

Since the city of New Orleans was founded, it has been a major port city. New Orleans is also located on the Mississippi River and there are so many different items that are transported along the river. This city was known as the center of trade between cultures and goods. The river is also known as the center trade spot. This provides many different jobs for the people who live in the city. When New Orleans was first forming, the steam boat was just invented. A trip that would take four months leaving out of St. Louis to New Orleans now only took about three days. This increased the New Orleans Port from eight million dollars to around thirteen million dollars which is a huge increase. City data also states that "Major U.S. petroleum companies are located in New Orleans and they include Shell, Exxon, Mobil and British Petroleum (BP)." It is fascinating that those companies are all located in New Orleans because they are the major places that people do fill up their car and they are all coming out of New Orleans.

The last factor that plays an economic importance in the city would be tourism. Since the people here live in a city with so much history, people from all over the world want to come and experience the city life and they pay a lot of money to do so. They have an amazing culture that is very hard to find elsewhere so by having that, they are increasing their economic abilities to be able to have more money as a city. New Orleans is one of the oldest cities in American history and that is worth more than just a lot of money. The city is full of music, art, history and food. Many people who live in the city make their money off of tourists and their tourism is not just seasonal here. The city is always busy and filled with so many options.
