How the City Speaks Through History

The city of New Orleans speaks through its history due to their culture. There are many different ethnic groups that reside in the city. These groups include Creole, French, African American, White, Spanish, Vietnamese etc. As these groups might be from different parts of the world, they all have come together as a giant melting pot creating a large and wonderful city. New Orleans’s history also speaks through their food. They are always cooking for each other and they love their shellfish and their spicy foods.  They have numerous restaurants with food that you can only find when you are visiting. While enjoying home cooked food, their music demonstrates much of their culture and history. New Orleans is the founder of jazz music and they are known to be playing music on every street corner, in many restaurants and they will continue to play their music all through the night. In the year 2005, New Orleans experienced a huge hurricane that caused millions of dollars of damage to their city. As there was much devastation, they overcame their hurt and the city continued to be joyful and they made Hurricane Katrina a major part of their history. They even have art called “Katrina Art” which is pieces that the hurricane left behind and they have been stored for the people to look back on. This city also speaks through Mardi Gras. This festive celebration dates to the year 1699. Throughout history, this celebration has involved carnivals, crazy costumes, and giant floats. The original Mardi Gras can be traced back to medieval Europe and it is still celebrated today.
